CRT Discharging Procedure

by Rob Mitchell
ed. Brett Walach

I shouldn't have to tell you this, but the Vectrex's CRT can retain dangerous high voltages like a big capacitor just waiting to zZaP! your a$$ if you touch it without discharging first. Will you die if you get zapped? I don't know for sure, but it definitely won't feel good either way. So do yourself a favor and read the article on how to discharge your CRT.

Vectrex Troubleshooting Guide
( vecguid.pdf, 418Ki )

Scanned courtesy of
Marc Donner

"Thanks Marc!"

"I received this document as a photocopy sometime in the 1980s. I scanned the original using an HP ScanJet scanner in 1998. I converted the TIFF images to a PDF file and verified that the original sequence and appearance matched the original photocopy in detail page by page." - Marc Donner

This is an original GCE document which was probably sent out to authorized service technicians to repair Vectrex units nation wide. This document contains the test procedure from the Vectrex Service Manual and a nifty "Symptom, Tools/Eq. Needed/Test Procedure/Probable Cause" Quick Reference Chart for easy diagnosis of common problems. There is also a few referenced waveforms.

On Dec. 28th, 1999, Rob Mitchell typed in the chart so I could put it into HTML format for quick online debugging.

"Thanks Rob!"

Vectrex Service Manual

"Thanks Marc!"

"My original is a two-sided photocopy. I scanned all 52 surfaces using an HP ScanJet scanner on 12 June 1998 and verified that the order of the pages in the PDF file was exactly as in the original and that all of the pages were essentially identical to my original. On pages 24 and 28 are five items that are highlighted in the original and not readable in the scanned image. I've transcribed the details from those five lines into notes on the pages. There are a number of blank pages on the original, and I've left them in the PDF file." - Marc Donner

This is an original GCE document which was probably sent out to authorized service technicians to repair Vectrex units nation wide. This document includes the Vectrex Owners Manual in the first section. It also contains sections on the disassembly of the entire Vectrex, various adjustments, the test procedure, a complete parts list, a block diagram of the circuitry, and full schematics.

Here is a separate TXT file with the 5 parts that Marc describes so you can print them out.
